Elora, Ontario: A Little Town with a Lot to Love

There are some places you visit once, check off your list, and move on. And then there are places like Elora that keep calling you back. I’ve been to this charming little Ontario town countless times over the years, and somehow, every visit feels a little different and always wonderful. Over the years, I’ve experienced Elora in so many different ways, from camping at the Elora Gorge here as a teenager to enjoying a girls’ getaway with my friends, to staying at the beautiful Elora Mill with my husband. Most recently, we returned as a family, renting a spectacular Airbnb to celebrate a very special 81st birthday.

There’s just something about Elora. Between the beautiful views, great food, cute shops and friendly people, it feels like a true getaway without being far from home. A little town with a whole lot to love!

Where is Elora, Ontario?

One of the best things about Elora is just how easy it is to get to. Tucked into Wellington County in Southern Ontario, Elora feels like a charming little escape, yet it’s surprisingly close to several major cities. It’s about 30 minutes from Guelph, 30–40 minutes from Kitchener-Waterloo, and roughly 1½ hours from Toronto, making it an easy choice for a day trip or, even better, a weekend getaway.

If you have a little extra time, there’s lots to explore around Elora too. The charming town of Fergus is just a short drive away, and St. Jacobs Market is always a fun stop for shopping and local goodies. Visiting in October? You could even add Kitchener-Waterloo Oktoberfest to your weekend. And if you love the outdoors, there are plenty of trails nearby, with Rattlesnake Point a little farther away but definately spectacular views. It’s easy to see why Elora makes such a great home base for a weekend of exploring!

Stay Somewhere Special

One of the great things about Elora is that there’s a place to stay for just about every kind of getaway. You can treat yourself to a little luxury at a beautiful hotel, settle into a cozy Airbnb that feels like home, or keep things simple with a camping getaway surrounded by nature. For such a small town, Elora really does have something for everyone. I’ve experienced a few very different stays over the years, so I’m sharing the ones I’ve personally enjoyed.

A Little Luxury at Elora Mill

I’ve been lucky enough to experience the Elora Mill on more than one occasion. I’ve stayed here for a getaway with my husband and also for a fun girls’ weekend. Two completely different trips, yet I walked away feeling exactly the same each time. There’s just something special about this place. From the moment you arrive, it feels like a true escape, and quite simply, it’s amazing.

Perched above the gorge, the Elora Mill is the perfect place to relax and treat yourself. With beautiful rooms, amazing views, a spa, great food and a rooftop pool, everything you need is right there. And when you’re ready to explore, downtown Elora is just steps away.

The service at the Elora Mill has always been wonderful, and the restaurant is just as impressive. From the food to the friendly service, we’ve always had a great experience. If you’re looking to treat yourself to a special little getaway in Ontario, the Elora Mill is definitely worth it.

Our Elora Airbnb: Perfect for a Family Getaway

For our most recent visit, we were travelling as a family to celebrate a very special 81st birthday, and this time an Airbnb made perfect sense. We rented a spectacular home where we could all stay together, and I think that was one of the things that made the weekend so memorable. Instead of heading back to separate hotel rooms at the end of the day, we had our own space to gather, relax, have a glass of wine and enjoy being together. For a family celebration, girls’ weekend or group getaway, I love the idea of renting a house and making it your home base while exploring Elora.

Camping at the Elora Gorge:

My memories of Elora actually started long before the luxury hotels and weekend getaways. I camped at the Elora Gorge (espically on May 24 weekend) as a teenager and then with my family in my RV years later! If you love being outdoors, this is such a fun and affordable way to experience the area. The campground sits within the Elora Gorge Conservation Area, where you can spend your days hiking, taking in the views and, in season, tubing along the Grand River. The tubing is really fun and I would highly recommend trying it! There are both unserviced and serviced campsites, so you can make the experience as rustic or comfortable as you like.

Come Hungry: Where to Eat in Elora

Elora may be small, but there are plenty of delicious reasons to come hungry.

Elora Mill Restaurant

There’s something really special about dining here. The seasonal menu is wonderful, the service always feels warm and welcoming, and the views overlooking the gorge are hard to beat. Whether you come for breakfast, lunch or dinner, it’s the kind of place where you’ll want to slow down, enjoy the food and take in the scenery. It really adds something memorable to an Elora getaway.

If you are looking for a unique dining experience, you may want to consider booking the Kitchen Counter Experience. You’ll have a front-row seat to the kitchen, watching the chefs at work while enjoying a multi-course tasting menu right in the middle of all the action. This restaurant is always be at the top of my list to eat iin Elora!

Community Coffee Café

Community Coffee is one of those little places that just fits perfectly in Elora. The owner Laurie has created a cozy, welcoming spot where you can grab a great coffee, enjoy a bite to eat and simply hang out for a while. It’s an easy stop while wandering downtown and a great example of the friendly, small-town feel that makes Elora so special. I really enjoyed chatting with Laurie over a coffee and one of her homemade mixed berry muffins. If you stop by, be sure to try one of her homemade treats—the muffin was honestly one of the best I’ve ever had!

Elora Brewing Company

A relaxed local brewery set in a beautiful old limestone building, with the beer brewed right here in Elora. It’s a great spot to grab a locally made craft beer, enjoy a bite to eat and unwind after a day of exploring town.

Elora Bread Trading Co.

Pick up a loaf of naturally leavened sourdough to bring home. You may want to grab two you’ll thank yourself later. I bought a sourdough bread, a foccacia bread, and some organic bread flour to make my sourdough bread recipe at home!

The Lodge Cafe:

Delicious coffee, open early and pastries, biscuits and breakfast. The staff was wonderful.The cheddar herb biscuit was absolutely delicious!

The Friendly Society

A stylish but relaxed spot on West Mill Street for lunch, dinner or cocktails. I have eaten here many times and enjoyed the food and atmosphere. It is very cozy.

The Evelyn

A cozy French-inspired bistro that’s perfect when you’re looking for a lovely lunch or dinner in town.

Tony’s Sourdough Pizzeria

Wood-fired sourdough pizza tucked inside the Elora Mews. Casual, delicious and an easy dinner choice

Things to Do in Elora

For a small town there is so much to do in and around Elora. From shopping, to hiking and spa time, there is something for everyone to enjoy! Here are some of my Elora Favourites!

Shopping:

There is something special about small town shopping. I just love unique stores and Elora has an array of cool different shops. For high quality unique clothing check out Ephiphany Apparel Elora, Aria Boutique Elora. For Home goods, you must check out Seasons Home and Gift, Karger Gallery, Grand Gourmet for all you foodies out there this is a great shop! A couple more to mention, A Natural home shop, Honeychurch. For authentic art check out Hanscomb Glass Studio, Elora Pottery, Gallery Vernissage, Mermaid in Elora,

Hiking and The Great Outdoors:

Wellington County is especially great for hiking and beautiful landscapes. I would recommend visiting the Elora Gorge Conservation which is located just outside Elora main town area. If you are staying in town there is a beautiful hiking trail that follows the Grand River. There are beautiful lookouts along the way. Time for some great pictures!

Relax at the Spa:

If you’re looking to slow things down a little, the spa at Elora Mill is such a treat. With beautiful views overlooking the gorge, it’s the perfect place to book a treatment, relax and enjoy a little downtime. Whether you’re visiting for a romantic weekend or a girls’ getaway, adding some spa time is a pretty wonderful way to experience Elora. I must also include that the Elora spa has a small boutique selling their spa products. I always buy their signature lotion. It smells AMAZING!

A Little Town with a Lot to Love

After all these years and so many different visits, Elora is still one of those places I’m always happy to return to. I’ve camped here as a teenager, visited while our daughter was at university, enjoyed girls’ weekends, stayed at the beautiful Elora Mill with my husband, and most recently celebrated a special family birthday here. Every trip has been different, but Elora never disappoints.

Maybe it’s the beautiful gorge, the great food, the cute shops or simply the friendly small-town feel—but there’s just something about Elora. It’s close enough for an easy Ontario getaway, yet somehow feels like you’ve gone somewhere special.

A little town with a lot to love? I think that sums up Elora perfectly. ❤️
