What apples are best for baking?

Selecting the right apples for baking is pivotal to achieving the perfect balance of flavour, texture, and sweetness in your baking.

Varieties such as Granny Smith, Honeycrisp, and Braeburn are widely regarded as some of the best choices for baking.

The tartness of Granny Smith apples holds up well during baking, offering a pleasant contrast to the sweetness of desserts.

Honeycrisp apples bring a delightful crispness and a natural sweetness that intensifies when cooked, while Braeburn apples maintain their shape and offer a harmonious blend of sweet and tart flavours.

These apple varieties, with their distinct attributes, ensure that your baked treats are infused with a mouthwatering depth of taste and a satisfying, tender texture.

instant pot timing for the best baked apple

I have discovered that everybody has a different preference for a perfectly baked apple. Some like a super soft baked apple while others like a more firm baked apple. Here is a general guideline for baking your apples to your liking.

When using an Instant Pot to bake apples, the cooking time can vary depending on the size and type of apples you’re using, as well as personal preference for the level of softness. However, as a general guideline, you can follow these timings for achieving different levels of softness:

  1. Slightly Firm (Still Holds Shape): For apples that are slightly firm but have a softened texture, you can cook them in the Instant Pot for about 4 to 6 minutes on the “Manual” or “Pressure Cook” setting. This is a good option if you want the apples to retain some of their shape and texture.

  2. Tender and Soft (For Baking Dishes): If you’re planning to use the baked apples in a recipe like pies or crisps, where the apples should be tender but not completely mushy, cook them for around 6 to 8 minutes on the “Manual” or “Pressure Cook” setting. This timing will give you apples that are soft enough to easily cut with a fork but still have a bit of structure.

  3. Very Soft (For Apple Sauce): If you’re aiming to make applesauce or need the apples to be very soft, you can cook them for about 8 to 10 minutes on the “Manual” or “Pressure Cook” setting. This longer cooking time will result in apples that are easily mashed and transformed into a smooth sauce.

Remember that cooking times can vary based on the size and type of apples, as well as the altitude and specific model of Instant Pot you’re using. It’s a good idea to start with the lower end of the suggested cooking time range and then perform a quick pressure release to check the apples’ tenderness. If they’re not as soft as you’d like, you can always cook them for a bit longer.

Also, consider that the cooking time doesn’t include the time it takes for the Instant Pot to come to pressure, which can add some additional minutes to the overall process.
