Health benefits of basil

Basil is not only a flavorful herb but also packed with numerous health benefits. Here are some key health benefits of basil:

  1. Rich in Antioxidants: Basil contains powerful antioxidants, such as flavonoids and polyphenols, which help protect the body from oxidative stress and free radical damage.

  2. Anti-Inflammatory Properties: The essential oils in basil, including eugenol, citronellol, and linalool, have anti-inflammatory effects that can help reduce inflammation and swelling in the body.

  3. Supports Digestive Health: Basil aids in digestion by promoting the production of digestive enzymes and reducing bloating and gas.

  4. Antibacterial Properties: Basil has natural antibacterial properties that can help fight harmful bacteria and infections, making it a great addition to your diet for immune support.

  5. Heart Health: The compounds in basil, such as eugenol, can help lower blood pressure and cholesterol levels, promoting better cardiovascular health.

  6. Bone Health: Basil is high in vitamin K, which is essential for bone health and helps with blood clotting.

  7. Boosts Immunity: Basil is rich in vitamins A and C, which are crucial for maintaining a strong immune system and protecting against illnesses.

  8. Skin Health: The antioxidants and anti-inflammatory compounds in basil can improve skin health, reduce signs of aging, and help with skin conditions like acne.

  9. Stress Relief: Basil acts as an adaptogen, helping the body manage stress by balancing cortisol levels and promoting mental clarity.

  10. Blood Sugar Regulation: Basil may help regulate blood sugar levels, making it beneficial for people with diabetes or those looking to maintain stable blood sugar.

I like to use my Vitamix blender when I make my pesto. It blends everything so smoothy. Alternatively, you could use a mortar and pesto or food processor.

What Goes Well With Pesto?

Pesto pairs well with so many dishes! Here are some of my favourite things to make with fresh pesto:

  1. Roasted Tomato & Pesto Pasta: I simply roast some grape tomatoes in the oven at 375 degrees for 25 minutes. Meanwhile, make the fresh basil pesto. Boil up some pasta, drain and then mix everything all together.
  2. Burrata, tomato and pesto panini: Spread some fresh basil pesto onto a baguette, add tomato and burrata and then press it onto a panini press.
  3. Fresh Pesto Spaghetti: This simple recipe can be whipped up quickly. Boil some noodles, drain and then toss with fresh pesto and top with some fresh parmesan.
